After Sony Pictures’ racing saga, Gran Turismo, directed by Neill Blomkamp premiered on cinema, it disclosed an online release date. The film revolves around the life of Jann Mardenborough, a budding racecar driver who shifts from the virtual video game world of Gran Turismo to exciting real-life racing. It gathered huge attention from the audience.
The blockbuster has received critical acclaim with a rating of 64%, numerous reviewers consider it to be a “solid adaptation,” although it is of a predictable formula. Gran Turismo has reached huge success at the box office grossing a margin of $103 million globally during the theatrical premiere. It began with a slow reach but soon came out to be extremely happening to the audience.
Gran Turismo races to its online release
Gran Turismo‘s online release date was announced soon after it ran in the theatres. Sony has recently updated that Neill Blomkamp’s racing epic will be available online on Tuesday, September 26. This Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) was released 32 days after the US theatrical release, with the international release a few weeks before. Sony’s summer blockbuster, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, had a different release pattern. It ran in the theaters for 46 days before becoming available digitally.
Interestingly, Spider-Verse 2 ran in the theatres for two additional weeks, probably because Spider-Man is a longer-lasting franchise at the box office than Gran Turismo.
Here’s a detailed differentiation between Sony Pictures’ theatrical releases and PVOD:
- No Hard Feelings – 53 days
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – 46 days
- The Pope’s Exorcist – 27 days
- Big George Foreman – 19 days
- 65 – 28 days
These digits clearly highlight different Sony Pictures strategies for each film, where some run longer in the theatres before being available on PVOD.
When and where to stream Gran Turismo?
After the digital release of Gran Turismo, apprehension about the Blu-ray release date and streaming availability will be in question. The Blu-ray release will follow Sony Pictures’ common pattern, likely to take place in late October or early November. However, the streaming release is uncertain. Sony Pictures tied up a deal with Netflix to be the platform for the Gran Turismo streaming release.
Recent films like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and No Hard Feelings have still not appeared on streaming and there’s not much information that Netflix has provided in the area. To compare, the movie 65, starring Adam Driver, which started running in theatres on March 10, shifted to Netflix on July 8, 121 days later. Observing the same pattern with Gran Turismo, the film is likely to be available on Netflix on December 24 of this year. This timing coincides with the holiday season providing a great festive watch for the viewers.
Gran Turismo will be digitally available on Tuesday, September 26.
