The cast of Fast & Furious 9 is eager to move past the male characters as the sole focus of the franchise and make the films more female-centric moving forward, including approaching the possibility of a spinoff.

The series of nine films followed a series of core male characters who were the focus of the action and pushed the storyline forward. However, the strong female characters are generally supportive of the men and have not had the opportunity, thus far, to lead their own storylines.

The Fast & Furious films have progressed a long way from their initial installments where hijacking trucks and street races were the norms. The franchise’s popularity has allowed it to morph into a hero-based sequence of films

In the caption of a 2020 Instagram post, Vin Diesel revealed that the Fast female protagonist-driven spinoff was an idea he created in 2017, and the pitch was made in 2020 to studio heads.

In 2019, Charlize Theron was considered the lead for a potential spinoff film built around The Fate of the Furious villain Cipher. However, the broad task of changing the focus of the films from male-dominated to more female-centric will likely occur sooner than later

Female centric spin-offs will take place due to the current climate of equal representation for all genders and as the franchise remains a hot property for Universal.

The Fast Saga officially kicked off in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious, the movie which introduced viewers to characters like Dominic, Brian and Mia Toretto. Two decades later, the film series is still going strong, with new and returning cast members thrown into storylines that propel the stakes higher and higher.
